The Laws of Popular Culture

Entertainment Tonight

Entertainment Tonight is a daily tabloid-style television entertainment news show that is syndicated by CBS Television Distribution throughout the United States, Canada and in many countries around the world.

The title sequence and the opening music tells me that the show deals with Hollywood topics, because the typographic logo, background music and the images helps to convey the tone and mood of the program.

Some messages that are being passed to the viewers by the appearance, body language and style of the host and hostess are the fads and styles of today.

The main purpose of this show is to help viewers buy, watch and read breaking news stories, upcoming film and television projects, and one-on-one interviews with Hollywood talents and celebrities. The show influence the viewer to buy the products by advertising with a celebrity who the viewer might like.

The show reflect most of the Laws of Popular Culture such as Money, Speed, Change and Fun. The show reflect Money, because the Entertainment Tonight makes tons of money through advertising products and movies. E.T. reflect the Speed, because the show is very fast-paced, so the audience does not get bored of watching it. Furthermore the Change is reflected throughout the Show, because in order for Entertainment Tonight to survive, it needed new things every show or else the show will die due to not catching up to the new changes in the society, and the world. Lastly, the show reflects the Fun, because if the show did not have any fun to it, then it will lose the viewer's interest.

The tone and the mood of the program was very up-beat, and very bright and fancy. The way hosts interviewed celebrities gave the audience a feeling of satisfaction, because hosts ask questions that are what fans wants to ask. Also the whole program has a mood of brightness and fancy like feeling, because of the visual images of the hosts and the show.

OSCARS

OSCARS: Academy Award: an annual award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for achievements in motion picture production and performance

anne hathaway and james franco 2011 oscars

Anne Hathaway and James Franco will be hosting 2011 Oscars. They will be sharing hosting duties for the 83rd annual Academy Awards.
The two actors “personify the next generation of Hollywood icons— fresh, exciting and multi-talented."
James Franco and Anne Hathaway, 2011 Oscars hosts will be taking the reigns from last year’s hosts, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. Unlike James, “Love and Other Drugs” star Anne Hathaway is not stranger to the Academy Awards stage as she did a little dance performance on stage with Hugh Jackman, 2 years ago, when he hosted the show.
The show did a good job of trying to appeal to a younger demographic by putting younger hosts. The laws of popular culture applied to this show are: money, change and fun. the law of money is applied when the show promotes product which triggers audience's desire. The law of change is applied, because the hosts were changed to younger celebrities, and also there were some changes within the show, such as style and mood. The law of fun is applied by promoting the show using humourous video.

Images and Image-Makers

EMINEM

Marshall Bruce Mather III. a.k.a. EMINEM. Eminem is an American rapper, record producer and an actor. Eminem is someone I somewhat admire, because he is the white rapper who can rap almost as good as other famous rappers, such as 50 cents. Eminem influenced me in many ways. Firstly, he introduced me into the world of rap. He helped me understand that rap is not only about sex and drugs, but can be about a person's life, and can be very influential. Secondly, Eminem helped me realize that dreams can come true when you try hard, like Eminem himself, who is white Caucasian rapper who worked hard in order to become who he is now. Eminem not only influenced me but also influenced many other teenagers, by his rap, especially "Not Afraid," and "Love the Way You Lie." His rap and his style has influenced many others, because he is "Mr.Controversy." Himself and his rap are controversial towards the ordinary society, because generally rappers are all black, and also rap about stereotypical stuffs, such as drugs. However, Eminem has changed all this stereotypical ideas about rap. He is one of the best rapper in the world, and also at the same time, a person with great potential that can influence many others using his rap.

Film Poster Ice-Breaker Activity

DREAMER

a) The story of my partner's life that I have tried to indicate on this poster is that Jay's life is mystery and very dramatical. I have included what Jay's plans for the future (secret) in this poster and I excluded he's interests because it does not suit with the overall genre of this poster that I created.

b) The genre of this film is mystery, drama and adventure. In order to indicate these genres, I have created dark mood for mystery by controlling brightness and contrast. and I have also created dramatic mood by naming the film title as "DREAMER" and also the tagline gives the reader the sense of mysteriousness. And also the film's rating and the quotes helped me creating more mysterious and adventurous movie poster.

c) The target audience of this poster is all ages but mostly for teenagers, because the poster does not contain any sexual references, nor violences, nor ratings such as rated 18 for example. Furthermore, the target audience is most likely to be teenagers, because the title, which is called "DREAMER," depicts the teenagers and their goals, future and their dreams.
