The Laws of Popular Culture

Entertainment Tonight

Entertainment Tonight is a daily tabloid-style television entertainment news show that is syndicated by CBS Television Distribution throughout the United States, Canada and in many countries around the world.

The title sequence and the opening music tells me that the show deals with Hollywood topics, because the typographic logo, background music and the images helps to convey the tone and mood of the program.

Some messages that are being passed to the viewers by the appearance, body language and style of the host and hostess are the fads and styles of today.

The main purpose of this show is to help viewers buy, watch and read breaking news stories, upcoming film and television projects, and one-on-one interviews with Hollywood talents and celebrities. The show influence the viewer to buy the products by advertising with a celebrity who the viewer might like.

The show reflect most of the Laws of Popular Culture such as Money, Speed, Change and Fun. The show reflect Money, because the Entertainment Tonight makes tons of money through advertising products and movies. E.T. reflect the Speed, because the show is very fast-paced, so the audience does not get bored of watching it. Furthermore the Change is reflected throughout the Show, because in order for Entertainment Tonight to survive, it needed new things every show or else the show will die due to not catching up to the new changes in the society, and the world. Lastly, the show reflects the Fun, because if the show did not have any fun to it, then it will lose the viewer's interest.

The tone and the mood of the program was very up-beat, and very bright and fancy. The way hosts interviewed celebrities gave the audience a feeling of satisfaction, because hosts ask questions that are what fans wants to ask. Also the whole program has a mood of brightness and fancy like feeling, because of the visual images of the hosts and the show.

  1. You're right that one of the main purposes of this show is to sell celebrity magazines that deal with the same sort of topics that this show deals with.

How would you describe the tone and mood of the program? This idea could be expanded upon.
